A haze hung in the atmosphere, still carrying the echoes of the chaotic bomb cyclone that rattled the city last Tuesday. Even as countless individuals are still mending from the brutal effects of the recent harsh weather, with many homes left in darkness due to ongoing power outages, the show must go on. So, under the enchanting glow of Thursday night’s moonlight, the seats of the BLHS Performing Arts Center began to fill up for the Drama Club's fall production, “Puffs”: a play with amusing characters, clever ideas, and a comical setting, with slight romantic elements that make it stand out from other high school plays currently in production.
The story of the Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, follows Wayne Hopkins, an ordinary wizard boy from New Mexico played by Hailey Bias. As Wayne navigates through his time at the Magic school, he meets other characters, such as Oliver Rivers, a mathematician wizard from New Jersey played by Kai Tower; and Megan Jones, daughter of the infamous Xavia Jones, who thinks the Puffs are losers played by Kaylee Hobley; Ernie Mac, a very confident Puff played by Ella Gomes; Sally Perks, a blind and clumsy Puff played by Elsa McGarvey; and Susie Bones, a puff that lives in fear played by Jayla Davis. As Wayne navigates his years at the school of magic, he and his friends Megan Jones and Oliver Rivers become a trio, and together they face trials, triumphs, and an escalating series of magical mayhem, all while trying to define what it truly means to be a hero. They face enemies such as Xavia Jones, giant snakes, murderers, and more.
The cast of the Puffs brings boundless energy, joy, and charm to their characters, blending the comedy and emotional beats of the story. Oliver Rivers (Towers) brings unforgettable and lively moments to the play in the first act, making many charismatic jokes that delight the audience, while also showing the friendly, enthusiastic personality of a boy completely baffled by the magic world. Megan Jones (Hobley) shines as a character who evolves masterfully from a rebellious outcast to a spirited and loyal friend. Hobley perfectly captures her character’s journey, transforming from a dark, resentful outsider to someone who bonds with her housemates, becoming more friendly, energetic, and fun. Towers and Hobley both excel at showcasing their characters’ growth over the seven years, culminating in a romantic connection.
Wayne Hopkins (Bias), an ordinary boy who wants to pursue magic but often fails, is marvelously portrayed by Hailey Bias. Bias brings humor and heart to her performance, portraying Wayne's journey as he strives to become a great magician while struggling with self-doubt. Her ability to balance humor and emotional vulnerability makes her performance stand out.
With the introduction of Mr. Voldy (Gilbur), the raw energy from the stage ascends, electrifying the cast and audience alike. Carlos Gilbur fully embraces the hilarity of his character, with every appearance onstage eliciting laughter from the audience. Each actor’s hard work contributes to making the show unforgettable.
While the actors of the Puffs do a superb job of making the show excellent, this show would not run properly without the exceptional Tech Crew and their hard work. Abigail Reid and Ronin Allen ensured flawless sound quality, allowing every line and sound effect to resonate clearly, even for those seated at the back. Audrey Hilburn’s precise lighting transitions and Natalie Wassom’s expert spotlight control added a polished, cinematic touch that enhanced every moment on stage.
The audience played a vital role in the success of Puffs, bringing an atmosphere of warmth and enthusiasm to the performance. Their laughter, applause, and heartfelt reactions created an electric energy that fueled the cast’s spirited performances. From start to finish, the audience’s support and engagement made the evening unforgettable, embodying the strong sense of community that makes Bonney Lake productions so special.
As the play goes, I recommend keeping an eye on the Narrator, played by Emily Lunsford. Many times in the story, the narrator will pop up and explain significant information about the story. The narrator also has her own story that will be revealed.
