The air was thick with anticipation at Bonney Lake High School as the Panthers boys tennis team took to their home court for the season opener against the Puyallup Vikings. What began as a potentially damp afternoon soon gave way to clear skies and golden sunlight—a quintessentially beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest. A sizable crowd of Panther faithful gathered to witness their team kick off the season, hopeful and buzzing with excitement. However, what unfolded on the courts was a heart-stopping encounter that ended in a narrow 2-3 defeat for the home team.
The Panthers’ charge was led by their #1 singles player, Gavin Orozco, who put on a commanding performance. From the moment he stepped onto the court, it was clear Gavin was on a mission. Facing off against Puyallup’s top player, Cooper Johnson, Orozco quickly asserted his dominance on his home court. With a combination of power, precision, and court coverage, Orozco cruised to a straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-1, giving the Panthers an early lead.
Bonney Lake’s #2 singles player, Cameron Munsch, faced a tougher challenge against Ian Kendall. Munsch battled valiantly in the first set, pushing his opponent to the brink, but ultimately fell short with a 5-7, 3-6 loss. Munsch’s resilience and fight were on full display, but Kendall’s consistency proved the difference.
The doubles matches were where the day truly became a rollercoaster. The #1 doubles team for Bonney Lake, Thomas Howard and Evan Lane, ran into a buzzsaw in Isaac Devereux and Nathan Shim. Despite their best efforts, Howard and Lane struggled to find answers to the Puyallup duo’s aggressive play, losing 3-6, 3-6.
As the afternoon wore on, the #3 doubles match provided the kind of drama that makes tennis such an exhilarating sport. Bonney Lake’s Adam Quinto and Holden Mann squared off against Puyallup’s Xander Devereux and Wyatt Morrison in a match that could have gone either way. The Panthers duo started strong, taking the first set 6-4, but stumbled in the second, losing 2-6. With the match deadlocked at one set apiece, the third set became a nail-biter, ending in a 6-6 tie. In the ensuing tiebreaker, Quinto and Mann held their nerve, storming to a 7-1 victory to win the match 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. The crowd erupted as Bonney Lake evened the overall match score at 2-2.
With everything on the line, the #2 doubles team of Jarrett Sroka and Jeremiah Mam faced off against Puyallup’s Linkin Bell and Sam Wieman. The match was a back-and-forth battle from the start, with Bonney Lake dropping the first set 4-6 but roaring back to take the second 7-5. As the tension mounted and the sun dipped lower in the sky, all eyes turned to court 4. The final set was a test of endurance and willpower, both teams pushing each other to the limit. Ultimately, the Vikings edged out the Panthers 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, sealing a 3-2 victory for Puyallup.
Despite the loss, the Panthers showcased their grit and potential, signaling to their opponents and fans alike that they are a team to be reckoned with this season. The boys will regroup and look to bounce back as they host a non-league match against White River on Wednesday, September 11th, at 3:30 PM. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they aim to turn the tide in their favor.
