Last Thursday night at Bonney Lake, the Panthers and White River Hornets took to the pitch in a non-league showdown that showcased top-tier defensive play. The matchup between Bonney Lake, now part of the SPSL 4A, and White River, a 3A NPSL powerhouse ranked 17th in Washington according to MaxPreps, was a chess match with both sides proving they could hold the line.
White River entered with a perfect 3-0 record, while Bonney Lake stood at 1-1-1 overall. Despite the rankings disparity, with the Panthers sitting at 84th in the state, the match was far from one-sided. Both teams displayed incredible discipline, and neither could crack the other’s defense, ending the night in a 0-0 tie.
The Panthers' sophomore goalkeeper, Reese Snider-Welsh, was a critical part of that impenetrable defense. Snider-Welsh only faced a handful of shots, thanks in large part to her backline's relentless pressure, which stifled the Hornets’ attack. The Hornets, however, were just as formidable on their side of the field, neutralizing Bonney Lake’s star forward, Jaylee Reynolds, who has been a key offensive player this season.
Both teams created opportunities but couldn't convert, as every advance was met by a staunch defensive response. The draw leaves both teams with momentum heading into their next matches. For Bonney Lake, the focus now shifts to their upcoming SPSL 4A league clash against their cross-town rivals, the Sumner Spartans, on Tuesday, September 24th, at 7:30 p.m. in Sumner.
This match, a defensive masterclass, serves as a reminder that in soccer, sometimes the most thrilling contests are those that end without a single goal on the scoreboard.
