A Passion for the Game

Meet Gavin Murphy, a Bonney Lake junior whose soccer journey started before he could even remember. Growing up in a cul-de-sac, he spent hours kicking the ball with his dad and older brother, developing the technical skills and love for the game that would shape his future. His dad, a lifelong soccer player, passed down both knowledge and passion. By age four, Gavin was already immersed in the sport.

By middle school, he was playing for Mountain View alongside many of his current high school teammates, forging chemistry and camaraderie that still drives Bonney Lake’s team today. Club soccer became the next step, as Gavin joined Washington Premier before moving to MRFC, where he now plays on the 07/08 MLS Next 2 Team.

Stepping Up to the Challenge

As Bonney Lake transitions to the competitive SPSL 4A division, Gavin sees opportunity rather than intimidation. “We’ve got the talent, the work ethic, and the mentality to compete with anyone,” he says. “A tougher league just means bigger challenges, and we’re more than ready to take them on.”

That confidence comes from experience. Gavin has started every varsity match since his freshman year, learning valuable lessons along the way. He embraces the leadership role that comes with being a junior veteran and hopes to help guide the younger players, particularly the freshmen, as they adjust to high school soccer.

Looking to the Future

While his focus remains on making an impact for Bonney Lake this season, Gavin has his sights set on playing soccer at the collegiate level. Though he hasn’t committed to a school yet, he knows one thing for sure—he wants to leave Washington. “Hawaii or California are my top choices, but really anywhere with sun is great.”

Off the field, Gavin is just as ambitious. He plans to study accounting at a four-year university and earn his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, proving that his drive extends far beyond the pitch.

Memories and Motivation

Murphy isn’t just about the competition—some of his favorite soccer memories aren’t from the field, but from the bus rides home after big away wins. “The spirits of the team were so high, and everyone was just having a good time,” he recalled.

That love for team culture, combined with his individual goals, fuels his aspirations for this season. “I want us at the top of the league. I want to put Bonney Lake on the map.” With a team full of motivated players and a coaching staff that includes his own father, Gavin believes this year could be something special.

Beyond Soccer

While soccer takes center stage in his life, Gavin enjoys unwinding with a round of golf with friends and family. Academically, he’s just as dedicated—earning a spot on the honor roll while balancing the demands of athletics.

As he prepares for another season, one thing is clear: Gavin Murphy isn’t just another player. He’s a leader, a competitor, and a young man with big dreams—both on and off the field.
