Meet Grace Atkinson, a standout midfielder for the Bonney Lake Panthers girls soccer team, has been a crucial part of the program since her freshman year. Now a senior, she’s leading the team through their first season in the competitive 4A division. While the transition from 3A has presented its challenges, Grace remains focused on her goals, both on the field and off.
In a recent conversation, Grace opened up about her journey through soccer, her aspirations beyond high school, and what brings her joy in life.
A Future Unfolding
While Grace hasn’t committed to a college yet, her next steps are already taking shape. She’s considering attending a community college, where the option to continue her soccer career remains a possibility. Beyond the soccer field, Grace is leaning towards a future in dentistry, though she hasn’t made any firm decisions yet.
“I haven’t decided anything for certain,” Grace shared, “but going into dental is probably what I’m leaning most towards at the moment. If I do end up going into dental, I would love to be able to only work a few days of the week and have the freedom to do things for fun on the side.”
That balance—between hard work and personal freedom—is something Grace has learned to value, both in soccer and in life.
A Soccer Journey Starting at Three
Grace’s connection to soccer started early, and from the beginning, it was clear that the sport would play a major role in her life. She credits her father for her enduring love of the game, explaining that his unwavering support and high standards pushed her to develop into the player she is today.
“I started soccer at the ripe age of 3 and have been playing ever since. I have to thank my dad for keeping me in the sport no matter what and holding me to high standards that have made me the player I am today,” Grace reflected.
High School Success and Highlights
Grace’s high school career has been nothing short of remarkable. She’s been a key part of the Panthers’ success, helping the team dominate the 3A league during her first three years. Now, with Bonney Lake having moved up to the 4A division, the level of competition has intensified, but Grace remains confident in her team’s abilities.
“During my past 3 years, Bonney Lake had dominated the 3A league time and time again. Now that Bonney Lake moved up to 4A this year, it has brought its challenges, but we are a strong team and we are holding our own,” Grace said.
For Grace, one of the most cherished aspects of her high school experience has been the opportunity to share it with her closest friends. "My highlights of my high school career are being able to play all 4 years with my best friends," she added. That bond with her teammates has fueled her desire to push harder, dream bigger, and aim for more success in her final season.
Aiming for Playoff Glory
As Grace and her teammates look toward the remainder of the season, her goals are clear: make it to the playoffs, and from there, make a run at state. It’s a lofty ambition, but one Grace believes her team is fully capable of achieving.
“I hope my team can make it to the playoffs and possibly do well enough to even make it to state. We are a solid team with so much potential, and I think we are capable of great things,” she said.
Life Outside of Soccer
When she’s not on the soccer field, Grace enjoys a variety of hobbies that keep her grounded and happy. She loves baking new creations with her boyfriend, spending time with her best friends, and diving into a good book. These small moments of joy offer a contrast to the intensity of soccer and school life, providing her with balance and a sense of peace.
Grace Atkinson’s journey is one of passion, hard work, and camaraderie. As she embarks on her final season as a Panther, her focus is on leaving a lasting legacy with her teammates and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead-both on and off the field.
