Meet Holden Mann, a senior swimmer at Bonney Lake High School who embodies the spirit of perseverance, leadership, and multi-sport athleticism. Known for his explosive speed in the water and his dedication to his team, Mann has made waves both in the pool and in the classroom. As he approaches the end of his high school journey, Holden reflects on the path that brought him here and shares his vision for the future.
The Road to College and Beyond
When asked about his post-high school plans, Mann is keeping his options open but has already made strides toward his goals. He’s been accepted to Washington State University and Western Washington University and is awaiting decisions from the University of Washington and Oregon State University. “I haven’t chosen where I want to go yet,” he said, “but I plan on studying civil engineering because it’s what I’m most passionate about.”
Mann is also considering joining the Civil Engineering Corps with the United States Navy after college. It’s a career path that combines his technical aspirations with a desire to serve his country—a reflection of his thoughtful and forward-looking approach to life.
Swimming: From Recreation to Competition
Unlike many high school swimmers who have been competing since elementary school, Mann’s journey in the pool began later. “I swam recreationally from a young age, but my competitive swimming didn’t start until freshman year,” he said. Despite this late start, Mann has quickly made a name for himself.
His best event is the 50 freestyle, where his raw power and speed shine. “I’ve always enjoyed it because of the raw power you get to put out in a short amount of time,” Mann said. He’s on the cusp of qualifying for league championships in the 50 free, and he’s already secured a league spot in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.00. Mann’s goal for the 100 breaststroke is to hit the district qualifying time of 1:11.90.
This season, Mann plans to explore new events to challenge himself and maximize his senior year experience. “I’m going to try different events for fun and see how many I can qualify for,” he shared. It's a strategy rooted in a love for the sport and a desire to challenge himself.
A Multi-Sport Athlete’s Perspective
Swimming isn’t Mann’s only sport. He’s also a standout tennis player for the Panthers. “Joining the tennis team was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he said. “The friends I’ve made are a big part of my life, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way will stay with me forever.”
In addition to swimming and tennis, Mann is an avid snowboarder—a passion he’s pursued since he was seven—and a dedicated weightlifter. “Weightlifting is a big part of my offseason training for all of my sports,” he explained. Mann is a firm believer in the value of being a multi-sport athlete. “I think it’s the best way to take advantage of your youth, and it worked out really well for me.”
Academic Achievements and Leadership
Mann’s accomplishments extend far beyond athletics. He’s on track to graduate from Bonney Lake High School with not only his diploma but also an associate’s degree through Pierce College. “I’ve already fulfilled all of my high school credit requirements and am now focused on finishing my associate’s degree,” he said proudly. He’s also made the Dean’s List at Pierce College and is a varsity letterman in all the sports he plays.
In the pool, Mann is a leader and motivator for his teammates. “I’ve really enjoyed being a leader for my team,” he said. “Helping to motivate and encourage the new generation of Bonney Lake Panthers swim has been one of the highlights of my senior year.”
Hopes for the 2024 Swim Season
With a strong group of teammates, Mann is optimistic about what the Panthers can achieve this year. “We’re coming out of winter break training stronger than ever and ready to demolish the competition,” he said. As a senior, he’s focused not only on his own success but on building a legacy of excellence for the Bonney Lake swim program.
Holden Mann’s story is one of grit, growth, and giving back. Whether he’s slicing through the water in the 50 free, leading his team, or mapping out a future in civil engineering, Mann approaches every challenge with determination and purpose. His time at Bonney Lake High School may be coming to a close, but his impact will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
