The Bonney Lake Panthers boys golf team made a statement in their second SPSL 4A league match, outshooting the Puyallup Vikings 188-227 in a dominant performance at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting. It was a historic day for the Panthers, marking the lowest team round score in program history, and proving they’re ready to contend in their new league.

Riding the momentum from their victory against South Kitsap just a day earlier, they delivered another impressive performance against Puyallup.

Senior Kohen Sauer wasted no time setting the tone. The reigning 3A PCL standout, who finished fifth at state last season, was locked in from the first tee. Sauer stormed through the front nine at 4-under through seven holes and closed out his round with a commanding 3-under round of 33. His precision on approach shots and near-flawless execution on the greens made for a clinic in high school golf excellence, even with slow greens and tricky pin placements.

Sauer’s teammates followed suit. Junior Luke Nelson and senior Cameron Frey each fired a 38, contributing to the Panthers’ record-setting performance. Nelson’s pinpoint approach on hole five left him just a couple of feet from the pin, setting up a crucial birdie. Frey’s consistency off the tee kept him out of trouble, allowing him to capitalize with confident putting.

Hudson Rogel

Senior Hudson Rogel, who finished 46th in state last season, turned in a steady 39, pairing with Sauer in the lead group to set the pace early. Rogel’s ability to lag putt within inches on lengthy attempts kept the pressure on Puyallup, ensuring the Panthers remained in control. Freshman Alexander Ekberg rounded out the scoring with a 40, showcasing impressive poise in his high school golf debut. Sophomore Stephen Lucash posted a 42, just two strokes shy of making the leaderboard.

The Panthers’ performance sends a clear message to the rest of the SPSL 4A: Bonney Lake isn’t just here to compete—they’re here to win. With a deep, experienced lineup and an emerging freshman talent, they are the early favorites in the league.

Next up, the Panthers return home to take on Graham-Kapowsin on March 25th at 3:10 p.m.

Circle March 27th on your calendar. The Panthers will take on rival Sumner in what could be the match of the season. The Spartans are also projected to be atop the league standings, setting up a pivotal showdown that could determine the SPSL 4A frontrunner. If today was any indication, Bonney Lake is ready for the challenge.
